China's Gigabit fiber coverage has exceeded 80 million users

Wen Ku, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and the Director of the Information and Communication Development Department of the People's Republic of China, introduced at the recent China International Information and Communication Exhibition “2020 Gigabit Construction of 100 Cities and Future City Development Summit Forum” (via 21 Finance), China has already deployed gigabit broadband access networks in more than 300 cities and gigabit optical fiber covers more than 80 million users.

According to the "White Paper on Broadband Development in China" released by Wang Zhiqin, Vice President of China Academy of Information and Communications Technology at the forum, as of the end of June 2020, our country has 860 million FTTH/O fiber access ports with a penetration rate of 92.1%. In comparison, there were only 115 million in 2013 and the penetration rate was only 32.0%. China's fixed-line broadband users have reached 460 million, of which 430 million fiber users accounting for 93.2%, more than 400 million users of 100M and above accounting for 86.8% and 2.667 million users of gigabit and above accounting for 0.6%.

White paper data shows that in the first quarter of this year, the average download speed of our country's fixed-line broadband was 43.49Mbps which is equivalent to 5.2 times that of the same period in 2015. Compared with 2013 and 2014, it reached 12.3 times and 10.2 times. And the average download speed of 4G network was 29.02Mbps which is 1.4 times faster than that in 2016.

In the same period, China Mobile's broadband user penetration rate reached 94.1%, overfulfilling the "13th Five-Year Plan" target. Among them, 4G users accounted for 1.28 billion, accounting for 80.4% and 5G users reached 150 million. The average tariff for mobile data traffic was 4.3 CNY per GB with a year-on-year decrease of 23.3%. The monthly average household traffic reached 10.1 GB with a year-on-year increase of 29.2%.

In terms of regional development, the white paper pointed out that the eastern region is the fastest to promote gigabit broadband construction with a share of 58.1%. As the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei, Yangtze River Delta and Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area accelerate 5G deployment, 5G base stations in the three regions account for 63.4%. In addition, the number of broadband access ports in the central and western regions has also rapidly increased to 430 million with an increase of 1.68 times compared to 2013, accounting for 46.4% of the national total.
