PON Basic Concepts 

PON (Passive Optical Network) is a passive optical network with a point-to-multipoint (P2MP) structure.


  • OLT (Optical Line Terminal) is convergence equipment that is placed at the central office to terminate the PON protocol.
  • ONU (Optical Network Unit) is a terminal that is located at the customer end and provides users with various interfaces.
  • ODN (Optical Distribution Network) is composed of optical fiber and one or more passive optical splitters (POS), which connect OLT and ONU.
POL Network Architecture

POL (Passive Optical LAN): Passive optical local area network, a new type of local area network networking method based on PON technology, optimizes the basic wiring and network structure of the local area network and the network structure is flatter and simpler. It inherits the advantages of PON network such as large bandwidth, high reliability, flatness, easy deployment and easy management.
POL network uniformly carries services such as broadband, voice, video, WiFi, CATV and office.
POL solution is widely used in scenarios such as hotels, campuses, corporate parks, corporate office buildings, electricity and transportation.


 

POL Features

Due to the different network scales and different types of users, POL solution has made corresponding optimizations to ensure a better adaptation to the business needs of the enterprise. Through the POL solution, enterprises can combine different systems such as data, voice, video and wireless access into a single fiber optic network, which has advantages that other technologies cannot match.


  • All-optical network transmission, broadband, voice, video, WiFi, CATV and other multi-service integration and a single optical fiber transmits multiple services.
  • Adopt POL passive all-optical network networking, no electromagnetic interference, long service life, almost no maintenance and low cost.
  • Adopting POL passive all-optical network networking, the later expansion is flexible and it can be smoothly upgraded to a more advanced network system without rewiring.

POL and Traditional LAN

  • In the POL network, the aggregation switch in the traditional LAN is replaced by the OLT; the copper cable is replaced by the optical fiber; the access switch is replaced by the passive optical splitter.
  • ONU provides Layer 2/Layer 3 functions to access users’ data, voice and video services via wired or wireless access.
ODN Deployment

ODN (Optical Distribution Network) The optical distribution network is an FTTx optical cable network based on PON equipment and its function is to provide an optical transmission channel between the OLT and the ONU. Based on application scenarios, it can be roughly divided into park type and building type.
